Weekly Reflection – An Extraordinary Spirit
Then this Daniel began distinguishing himself among the commissioners and satraps because he possessed an extraordinary spirit, and the king intended to appoint him over the entire kingdom… but they could find no ground of accusation or evidence of corruption, because he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was to be found in him.
— DANIEL 6:3-4B
Even Daniel’s enemies knew that Daniel was a pious Judean, who prayed to the God of Israel three times a day. Witnessing his loyalty, they accused Daniel of violating Darius’ decree that stated, “whoever shall address a petition to any god or man, beside you, O king, during the next thirty days, shall be thrown into a lions’ den” (6:8). Consequently, Daniel was thrown to the lions but remained unharmed. When King Darius asked about his miraculous survival, Daniel stated that God sent an angel “who shut the mouths of the lions so that they did not injure me” (6:23).
God’s rescue of His servant Daniel proved that no matter the accusations leveled against him or the punishment that resulted, Daniel was faithful to God, and this was the most important qualification on his notable resumé. Like Daniel, we too should conduct ourselves in such a way that no matter the evil intent or accusation—we will stand firmly before the Lord, blameless and with a pure heart.
The God of Israel is called the “faithful God,” and believers must put our trust in Him (Deuteronomy 7:9). Even when the world is in chaos around us, we are called to be faithful to Him—to believe in the Lord’s might and desire to bless and keep us—and He will deliver us from any evil.
