ISRAEL WAR ROOM

Topline Information

  • October 7th marks 2 years since the largest single-day attack on Jews since the Holocaust.
  • Senior Israeli officials and senior Hamas terrorists are in Egypt for ceasefire discussions.
  • On Thursday, Israel stopped another flotilla with celebrity-provocateur Greta Thunberg.
  • On Wednesday, three members of Hamas were arrested by German police with help from Israel’s foreign intelligence service, Mossad.

Gaza War

  • Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Egypt for the negotiations.
  • Hamas’s response to President Trump’s peace plan did not actually commit to the key elements of the plan.
    • Specifically, Hamas did not agree to disarm or to hand over control of Gaza,
    • Worth noting: There are reportedly significant internal disagreements within Gaza – including on whether/how/when to release the hostages.
    • Worth also noting: Hamas does not have contact with or control over all of its terrorist cells.
  • Expected Hamas demands include the following:
    • Release of members of Hamas’s Nukhba Force; these individuals participated in some of the most egregious of atrocities that took place on October 7th.
    • Release of several notorious terrorists including those who plotted numerous suicide bombings.
    • Of note, Marwan Barghouti is on Hamas’s list.
  • In an effort to quite literally give peace a chance, the IDF has stopped offensive operations in Gaza City, taking a defensive posture.

Flotilla

  • The above flotilla, which contained 40 vessels, contained no aid for Gaza.
  • Of the 341 arrested, all but 138 have been deported. Thunberg was deported on Monday.
  • The Israeli government released documents showing that the flotilla’s organizing entity is linked to Hamas.
  • Another flotilla is reportedly en route to Gaza/Israel, though their destination is not confirmed.

Terrorism

  • Israel uncovered a weapons cache, including 15 rockets, associated with a terror cell in Ramallah. One member of the cell has been arrested; the rest are at large.
  • A Palestinian terrorist rammed his car into two teenagers near Jerusalem last week and then tried to stab them. The terrorist was “neutralized” by an armed IDF reservist.
  • Israel carried out a drone strike on a vehicle in southern Lebanon killing two people including a known Hezbollah terrorist.

Qatar International Relations

  • President Trump signed a document guaranteeing Qatari security. Specifically, this document – which does not bind the next President if s/he does not so wish – declares the following:
    • “It is the policy of the United States to guarantee the security and territorial integrity of the State of Qatar against external attack,”
    • “The United States shall regard any armed attack on the territory, sovereignty, or critical infrastructure of the State of Qatar as a threat to the peace and security of the United States.”
  • Analysis: Conventional wisdom suggests this was a necessary precondition to the Qatari’s finally putting the necessary pressure on Hamas to release the hostages and disarm. If so, this means that Israel’s attack on Doha was, in effect, a necessary precondition to Qatar putting the aforementioned pressure on Hamas. This is another reminder that in the Middle East, peace is first negotiated on the battlefield.
  • There is discussion amongst the foreign policy elite that as part of the above, multifaceted deal, Qatar’s Al Jazeera will lessen incitement against Israel and the United States.
