CUFI’s Word of The Week – Hezekiah’s Healing

“Return and say to Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of your father David, ‘I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will heal you…'”

–2 Kings 20:5

Walking in the ways of King David, King Hezekiah set his heart to follow God. Beginning to reign at just 25 years old, he cleansed the temple, the center of worship in Jerusalem, emulating the work of Solomon before him. Hezekiah re-instituted the celebration of Israel’s feasts, commanded in the Torah, and many people flocked to Jerusalem to participate. Hezekiah led by example and sought to rally the people back to God.

But wholehearted commitment to God does not mean we will not encounter trials and tribulations. Hezekiah fell deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah informed him that he would die, encouraging him to prepare for impending death. Hezekiah wept and prayed to God upon receiving dismal news, reminding God of is faithfulness. Such a bold reminder was  itself an act of faith, as Hezekiah trusted that God was compassionate and would perhaps heal him and bless Him according to His covenant love.

Hezekiah was rewarded for this faith, receiving 15 more years of life and a promise that he would see his kingdom rescued from Assyria in an impending attack.

We can be encouraged by Hezekiah’s life that God is always on our side when we follow Him faithfully, and He will protect, heal, and bless us in the face of adversity when we call upon Him.
